Okay guys, I promised that the speech be posted on the blog. Here it is!
''Today I stand on this stage; delivering the class graduation speech. It is not exactly the best job in school, because it signifies the closing of our last term in secondary school. The past two years with the class has been full of so much wonderful memories that it feels bitter letting it go. Classmates and teachers; you all contributed to this piece of memory for all to treasure. And treasure it we will!
Lets take a moment now to look back at our past. When students of different characters are combined together in a single class; what you get is fun, and fun is what sec 4/4 is about. All the jokes, the punishments, might seem insignificant to you at this time, but I assure you, they will be what you remember most of your secondary school life, not what you memorized from the textbooks and notes. And this memory will be carried along with us forever.
My friends, I urge us not to dwell too much on the past, but look into the future instead. Each new day holds so much adventure and excitement. Once we move on from our secondary school life, we are embarking on yet another adventure. We are continuing our journey into the unknowns of life and we do not know what the future brings. But one thing we know for sure, the path ahead will not be easy.
Each and every one of us will be aiming towards success; and success we will achieve if we do not allow ourselves to be deviated from the path towards it. Success cannot be measured. Nor can others define it for you. Success is determined in our hearts and it is achieved through pure courage. Courage, you will need to be able to stand up against all odds and push yourself to achieve what you set out to do. If you know what you’re worth then set out to get what you’re worth!
To a place worth going, there won’t be any shortcuts. Never allow yourself to be stopped by setbacks. Never stop trying! Each setback is a step that brings you closer to success. Learn from mistakes; keep moving forward, and soon, you will find success! Setbacks, no matter how serious, do not mean failure. You only fail when you quit.
Be true to yourself! Always do what you feel is right. Success is also about how much you can get hit by hardships, and keep moving forward. But you must be willing to take the hits, and not point fingers, and blaming others for you not being where you’re supposed to be. If any, the fault lies with you and so does the blame.
We are at democracy. We have the freedom to choose our path and the freedom to take the steps necessary to achieve it, so long as it does no harm to those around us. The world is not all sunshine and blue skies. It is the most cruel and nasty place that will do its best to stop you from your goals if you let it! But if you don’t, if you are strong enough to stand face to face with the harsh, stark and brutal realities of life and fight for your success, then no one can stop you.
It is your right to listen to your heart, and it is nobody’s right to say no to you after you have earned the right to be who you want to be and do what you want to do! But most importantly, we must believe in ourselves. Because until you start believing in ourselves, you are not going to live a happy life! Perhaps all I have said makes success sound like a difficult thing to achieve. But let me tell you something; it isn’t difficult at all. The key to success is you and the key to failure is trying to please everybody! A minute of success is worth all the setbacks paid before. But remember, my friends, you can only savor you own success and not one that others have defined for you.
Credit must be given where it is due, and the class of sec 4/4 would like to thank all the teachers who have taught us over the past two years; Mrs. Sandra Zou, Ms Chow Wai Yi, Ms Chan Suz Yi, Mr. Leonard Cheong, Madam Tan Kim Choo, Mr. Derrick Wong, Ms Tan Boon Hwee, Ms You Kim Choo, Mr. Adrian Teo, Mr. Erwin, and of course, Ms Santhi.
Remember class; never give up on what you believe!
To give this speech a politically correct ending, I urge us all to work hard for the impending O’lvls. With that, let us all Hail Success.
THANK YOU!! ''
It was really a wonderful feeling standing on stage reading this message out because I really believe in what I have said. And all of us should. Because once we give ourselves the belief that we need, we will excel; no matter the qualifications. Certificates are only paper. It is life's ups and downs that we should enjoy. Don't get too stressed up with the exams huh!
